Environmental and Sustainability

South Downs Leisure recognises that many of its activities provide an important opportunity to protect and improve the environment in which we work and serve. South Downs Leisure therefore attributes a high priority to the development and use of materials, products, processes and services that seek to reduce environmental damage and waste.

A ground source heat pump system

The pumps at Splashpoint Leisure Centre harness natural heat from underground sources providing environmentally conscious heating and cooling.

Printing

We have encouraged staff to default to double sided and black and white printing and use recycled paper wherever possible.

Wildlife

Beehives are in place at both Splashpoint Leisure Centre and Worthing Leisure Centre. Bee friendly planting and bird boxes are in situ at Field Place Manor House & Barns. In addition, we teamed up with the ‘Last Fisherman Standing’ project who painted a 25m long maritime mural by the paddling pool showcasing local marine species.

Junior environmental sessions

Past initiatives include Splashpoint discovery beach walk and recycling relays at Worthing Leisure Centre.

Cafes

We sell refillable cups and default to china wherever possible. We also use locally grown produce where we can (Mike made up some fabulous chilli made from products grown by Sustainable Sussex in our garden). Plastic straws have also been banned.

Recycling

Recycling stations are available at all sites.

Toilets

Reclaimed water powers our toilets at Splashpoint which are also fitted with reduced flush mechanisms.

Movable Pool Floors

The movable floors within the main pool and the diving pool are left up at night making energy savings of 30%.

UV filtration system

UV filtration within our pools reduces the need for chemicals.

Showers

Timed showers at both Splashpoint and Worthing Leisure Centre reduce water consumption.

LED lighting

This is already in place at some sites with an aim to get all lighting replaced by 2020.

Marketing

Digital marketing has reduced the need for paper within the promotional mix.

Access

We encourage both staff and customers to cycle, walk or run to our centres through PR campaigns and our cycle to work scheme.

Champions

Site specific Energy Champions are now in place.

South Downs Leisure’s environmental policy

South Downs Leisure recognises that many of its activities provide an important opportunity to protect and improve the environment in which we work and serve. South Downs Leisure therefore attributes a high priority to the development and use of materials, products, processes and services that seek to reduce environmental damage and waste.

  • Increasing energy efficiency in terms of energy consumed
  • Reducing our CO2 emissions
  • Investing in new technology where this meets the investment criteria
  • Considering life cycle energy costs when procuring new products
  • Purchasing energy efficient plant equipment

There are various initiatives within our centres including solar panels at Worthing Leisure Centre, LED lighting within Davison Leisure Centre and gas heating in the outbuildings within Field Place Manor House & Barns. In addition Splashpoint Leisure Centre recycles its waste water and provides free natural energy via ground source heat pumps. These pumps provide an efficient heating and cooling system throughout the building. We address energy efficiency within all areas of our business and take responsibility for educating staff and raising awareness of environmental issues.
