South Downs Leisure have been working hard getting over 50’s more active, more often through walking football, netball and gardening. People who take part in these activities have testified to how much fitter and healthier they are and also how they no longer feel socially excluded.
We need your VOTE to provide over 50’s a more active solution. Health experts say it is the miracle cure we have all been waiting for. Exercise can reduce major illnesses, such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes and cancer, not to mention the benefits of meeting new friends and a new way of life.
Why vote for us

Worthing Leisure Centre
Walking Football, a slower-paced version of the game aimed at people over 50. This ever increasing popular game is designed to help people keep active or return to the sport maybe even due to illness.
A non-contact sport with no running or jogging. Players are penalised by the referee if they run persistently.
Gardening at Worthing Leisure Centre works in partnership with Sustainable Sussex.
Sustainable Sussex is about people, places, lifestyle, economy and creativity.
From grounds maintenance to chilli jam production. Our projects are as diverse as the volunteers that make them possible. This year our mixed over 50s group have created a raised keyhole bed to enable bend-free waist-height gardening. Worthing Leisure Centre is also home to Sussex Chilli Farm – our first big project which grows 1000s of chilli plants a year.
We are currently building wormeries to turn cafe food waste from Worthing Leisure Centre into valuable vermicompost and we have visions of large scale rainwater harvesting (1 acre) and creating 2 permaculture hedgerows to encourage wildlife as well as becoming a source of fruit, nuts and materials like bean poles and stakes for use around the garden.
Our Friday sessions are split into two, three hour sessions, so participants can take part in morning, afternoon or both sessions, subject to individual capabilities. We all know what’s it’s like to over-do things, so we take breaks when we need them and share tips on how to most easily carry out tasks that may be hindered by achy joints or uncooperative backs!
Our vision for the over 50s project is to create a model eco-village around the model railway at Field Place Manor House which is operated and maintained by Worthing and District Society of Model Engineers. This project will bring people of different ages and with different skills together to create another great community resource.
The project options are endless on such a great site – come and see for yourself and get back into gardening!
